Ex Wife Wins $9 Million By Suing "The Other Woman" For Breaking Up Marriage

Publicado

When a marriage breaks up, there sometimes can be a third party. But being the "other man" or "other woman" can cost you: In seven states, you can sue the woman or man you believe broke up your marriage. And recently, this centuries' old law helped one North Carolina woman win big -- $9 million big.

Under a law called "alienation of affection" Cynthia Shackelford, 60, of Raleigh, sued Anne Lundquist, 49, of Aurora, N.Y., charging that she broke up her marriage.

"Early Show" co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez reported the concept dates back to common law, when a wife was considered property that could be stolen.

Some attorneys find the law archaic.

Tina Schuchman, a family law attorney, told CBS News, "It's ridiculous. It's absolutely ridiculous. And the trend is more and more toward shutting it down."

But in Cynthia Shackelford's case, the law was upheld in a big way. She won $5 million in compensatory damages and $4 million in punitive damages.

However, Allan Shackelford claims his marriage didn't fail because of Lundquist.

In a online post to his local newspaper, he said his wife "... wanted to divorce him at least two years before he began a relationship with Anne Lundquist. (The) marriage did not break-up because of Anne Lundquist."

But on "The Early Show," Cynthia Shackelford said she didn't say she was going to divorce him at all. At that time, Cynthia Shackleford said, she and her husband were working on improvements to their home, so their children could come over after they got married with their children.

"I had no idea that there was divorce in the future," she said. "... It was all news to me."

Cynthia Shackelford added that she didn't believe her husband was cheating.

"I didn't believe it because I trusted him," she said. "And he had told me that they were just friends. And any time any affair was mentioned it was alleged. So I just kept on and on, and just saw the path of our marriage was not doing well. And it seemed like she was always calling our house and he was always taking her home and one thing led to another."

But why sue the other woman? Rodriguez pointed out that she wasn't the one who made marriage vows.

Cynthia Shackelford responded, "But she's the one that came in between us as far as her luring ways, and which I had plenty of proof from e-mails, phone records, spending, that she alienated him from me. She used work and other ways to get in and get friendly with him, and it's like those Lifetime movies or whatever that you see that she just worked her way."

Rodriguez noted that Lundquist has said she doesn't have $9 million to pay Cynthia Shackelford.

"I'm not in it for the money, but I wouldn't believe anything she had to say anyway," Cynthia Shackelford said, adding, "But I'm just trying to send a message to other people that are like Anne (Lundquist), that if they're looking at somebody else's husband -- that's still living at home, that's still sleeping in the marital bed and comes to parties and introduces his wife at his better half -- to leave him alone and not go after him."

Lundquist is appealing the $9 million decision. But Cynthia Shackelford's lawyer Will Jordan said he believes the decision will stand.

As for the marriage law referenced in this case, Lundquist likened it to laws against people who tamper with contracts.

"Perhaps if one network tried to lure you to another against your contract, there would be a suit for interference with contract rights," he explained. "And 'alienation of affection' is very similar to that."

Soulja Boy & Chris Brown Take Shots at each Other on Twitter

Publicado

SandraRose reports:

The last time we heard from Chris Brown was when he begged his remaining fans to help him resuscitate his failed career by calling into the radio stations to get them to play his records.

When that failed, he created another Twitter page (after deleting his first page) and begged his fans to follow him again. Chris Brown is so deep in denial that when his fans didn’t rush to follow him en masse on Twitter, he promised to go live on Ustream if they would just help him get to 100,000 followers (which they dutifully did, but only because they pitied the fool).

With all that begging and pleading going on, you had to figure that Chris Brown’s peers/competition were waiting in the wings to throw rocks at him. Rapper Souljaboy Tellem took the first pitch tweeting this nonsense about Bow Wow and CB’s followers not equaling his 2 million plus followers.

Xzibit Thinks The OG's Need To Help The "New West" In Order To Bring The West Coast Back

Publicado

The days of when the west coast dominated radio airwaves and the Billboard charts disappeared a long time ago. The days of unity, where established artists helped the newcomers break onto the scene, seem like a distant past.

Today, aside from a handful of already established artists, the sea of untapped talent are on a constant grind, waiting for their shot to become the next artist to break into the mainstream.

Those OG co-signs have become less and less over the years, and new artists are left with a large task and steep hill to climb.

While Ice Cube recenlty said it wasn't his responsibility to help local Los Angeles rappers, one veteran feels it's one of the keys needed to bringing a vibrant music scene back to the city.

His name is Xzibit.

"I feel like if more of us held down more of our own, it would generate and circulate throughout the whole coast. We'd have a vibrant f***in' scene here," X told BallerStatus in a recent interview, adding that he, himself, got the co-sign of an OG to get on. "How did I get on? What happens if King Tee wouldn't have come through and been like 'Hey man, not only can you drink 40s, you can rap' (laughs). King Tee came through and gave me a shot, and Tha Alkaholiks a shot. It's gotta start somewhere."

During Xzibit's show and prove days, there were showcase events around the Los Angeles area, namely Unity and the Good Life. These shows not only bred guys like X, but also helped launch the careers of other acts such as the Black Eyed Peas, the Hieroglyphics crew, and even Slaughterhouse's Crooked I.

The "Pimp My Ride" host says that if artists could somehow interact and help each other more, the west could have a shot again. X isn't just talking about what could be done either, he's practicing what he preaches.

If you've paid attention to some of the new music he's released as of late, you'll notice collaborations with newcomers like Young De, who X recently formed a group with alongside B-Real. Most recently, he enlisted the skills of young producer Scoop Deville for his brand new single "Hurt Locker", which he couldn't be happier about.

"It gotta start somewhere," Xzibit says. "I think f***in' with these dudes, they gonna be representatives of where we at. Some them the ropes before somebody else takes some more sh** from us."

Rev Run's 15 Year Old Son Diggy Simmons Signs Deal With Atlantic Records

Publicado

With his mixtape (The First Flight) and countless other singles/remixes (Star Is Born, Point to Prove, Set Me Free) being recognized by fans, yet overlooked by major media outlets, it took the release of his remix to Drake's, "Over" (Just The Beginning), that eventually got Daniel "Diggy" Simmons love shown by said outlets for being "the first" to drop something over the newly then released track. Although people were receptive of his remake of the new single, Diggy still had more hearts and ears to capture and win over, with the goal of letting everyone know that him creating music was not a hobby but a passion and it was something he is great at.
Going back into the studio, the young fashion icon spit a crazy sixteen over Nas' "Made You Look", and unleashed "Flow Stoopid". Linking up with PhilTheGod to create a visual along with the track, Flow Stoopid, was the hit that finally got Diggy more love then anticipated. With cosigns by Lupe Fiasco and Swizz Beatz via twitter and blog postings by Kanye West and Common, Diggy EARNED his buzz that has major companies, labels and the internet wanting to get familiar with him.
Last week the buzz generated rumors that Atlantic Records signed Diggy Simmons, a small statement of denial was released due to at that time it not being true but as of Monday, March 22, 2010, the day after Diggy's 15th birthday, the deal has been sealed; Atlantic Records has signed Daniel "Diggy" Simmons!!
"For all of those who have supported the project thus far, you are MUCH appreciated as this has been a FUN and VERY successful journey. It really does not stop with getting signed, more GREAT news to come SOON!"

Barack Obama Speaks On The Passage Of Health Care Reform Bill

Publicado

There is an old rule of politics, from the old politics - before the discourse was played out like a food fight every night on cable television. The rule goes something like this:
When all else fails, resort to principle.
It is what this President has done with health care, what he has done across the first 14 months of his administration. This is the President he was supposed to be.
Maybe the worst part of this debate - worse than the ugliness and epithets we witnessed in rallies against this bill in Washington on Saturday - is this: Maybe we have reached the point where no one believes that any politician, even the biggest we have, could actually do something for the right reasons. And that is not just ugly. It is obscene.

(...)

You don't have to like this bill, you don't have to like Nancy Pelosi, you are allowed to think that Barack Obama should have spent more time over the past 14 months talking about the people who are out of work in America rather than focusing on the ones without health care in America.
But do even the worst crackpots, from the Tea Party movement and anywhere else, think that Obama would have put himself on the line this way if he didn't believe in what he was doing?
Of course this has been a wretched partisan process all along, with deal-making along the way that would have made the Gambinos blush. Of course this isn't a perfect plan, because there is no such thing, because the original imagining of Medicare wasn't perfect either.
"I've read back on the debate surrounding the Medicare Act," Rep. Anthony Weiner said yesterday. "Medicare was supposed to be socialism, too. It was going to shut down our economy. Forty-five years ago you got the same b.s. arguments you hear today."
"But even his critics would have to admit this is a risky thing he is doing," Weiner said. "And something he should be honored for doing, not attacked."
On this one, he is the President he was supposed to be, the President of change you really can believe in. Barack Obama hasn't always been better than the opposition. This time he is.

Lloyd Banks Talks Celebrity Nude Leaks

Publicado  March 22, 2010

VIBE: Have you ever had an experience with celebrity hacking that you were able to prevent?
LLOYD BANKS: Not with no pictures or nothing like that. [Laughs] But shit, as we speak, my Gmail was hacked into a few days ago. It wasn’t the first time… It’s real dangerous out there ’cause they can redirect your mail so stuff will be going to them from your inbox.

Damn, like someone reset the password?
Yeah. I just immediately changed my password.

Is there anything you have on lock that, if leaked, would really embarrass you?
Nah. Shit, the fact of losing music is embarrassing enough, but all that other shit like pictures and video… I don’t do any of that shit. You gotta know who you are as a human. [Laughs] If you’re sending somebody your picture and you’re just a regular Mo, then that picture won’t mean anything. But you don’t have to be a celebrity to be embarrassed. You can be a regular person that turned into a celebrity later. So that goes for the regular Moes too. Be careful.

Even if you have the most gorgeous girl begging you to videotape or something, you won’t do it?
Shit, I’ll do it, but I’ll just keep the tape. And actually I don’t even trust myself, so I ain’t gonna keep the tape either. [Laughs]

So you just delete immediately?
Yeah, immediately. That’s my advice.

When a celebrity sees another celebrity’s naked photos leak, what’s your first thought?
It depends on who it is.

Okay, let’s say... Trina.
I’m like ‘Damn.’ That’s something I wanted to see for a minute. I ain’t mad at it. I mean, I don’t wish that on nobody, but it happened and I’ma look.

Historic Day For America: Health Care Reform Bill Passes By Vote Of 219-212

Publicado

WASHINGTON - The Democratic-controlled Congress approved historic legislation Sunday night extending health care to tens of millions of uninsured Americans and cracking down on insurance company abuses, a climactic chapter in the century-long quest for near universal coverage.

Widely viewed as dead two months ago, the Senate-passed bill cleared the House on a 219-212 vote, with Republicans unanimous in opposition.

Congressional officials said they expected Obama to sign the bill as early as Tuesday.

Republicans hoped that by blocking the legislation, they would be able to thwart Obama's ambitious domestic agenda, including immigration reform and climate change legislation.

While national health care has long been a goal of presidents stretching back decades, it has proved elusive, in part because self-reliance and suspicion of a strong central government remain strong in the U.S.

Obama planned to make a statement to the nation Sunday night after the vote.

After more than a year of political combat - certain to persist into the fall election campaign for control of Congress - debate on the House floor fell along predictable lines.

"We will be joining those who established Social Security, Medicare and now, tonight, health care for all Americans," said Speaker Nancy Pelosi before the vote, referring the government's pension program and health insurance for the elderly.

Republicans opposed the measure as a takeover of government health care that would cut Medicare for the elderly and raise taxes by nearly $1 trillion combined.

"We have failed to listen to America," Rep. John Boehner the Republican leader said ahead of the vote.

Earlier in the day, the House argued its way through a thicket of Republican objections toward an evening vote on the bill to extend coverage to 32 million Americans who lack it, ban insurers from denying coverage on the basis of pre-existing medical conditions and cut deficits by an estimated $138 billion over a decade.

A shouting band of protesters outside the Capitol dramatized their opposition, and one man stood up in the House visitor's gallery shouting, "Kill the bill" before he was ushered out - evidence of the passions the yearlong debate over health care has stirred.

Obama lobbied by phone from the White House, then took the crucial step of issuing an executive order that satisfied a small group of Democrats who demanded that no federal funds be used for elective abortions.

Over and over, Democrats stressed the historic nature of the day. The measure represents the biggest expansion of the social safety net since Medicare and Medicaid were enacted in 1965 during President Lyndon B. Johnson's administration to provide government-funded health care coverage to the elderly and poor.

"Health care isn't only a civil right, it's a moral issue," said Democratic Rep. Patrick Kennedy. He said his late father, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, had worked his entire career for nationwide health care, and President John F. Kennedy before him.

Obama has said often that presidents of both parties have tried without success to achieve national health insurance, beginning with Theodore Roosevelt early in the 20th century.

The 44th president's quest to succeed where others have failed seemed at a dead end two months ago, when Republicans won a special election to fill Edward Kennedy's Massachusetts Senate seat, and with it, enough votes to prevent a final vote.

But the White House, Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Reid soon came up with a rescue plan that required the House to approve the Senate-passed measure despite opposition to many of its provisions, then have both chambers pass a fix-it measure incorporating numerous changes.

Under the legislation, most Americans would be required to purchase insurance, and face penalties if they refused. Much of the money in the bill would be devoted to subsidies to help families at incomes of up to $88,000 a year pay their premiums.

The legislation would also usher in a significant expansion of Medicaid, the federal-state health care program for the poor.

The insurance industry would come under new federal regulation. They would be forbidden from placing lifetime dollar limits on policies, from denying coverage because of pre-existing conditions and from canceling policies when a policyholder becomes ill.

Parents would be able to keep older children on their coverage up to age 26. A new high-risk pool would offer coverage to uninsured people with medical problems until 2014, when the coverage expansion goes into high gear.

Once enacted, the two bills would create a series of so-called "insurance exchanges" beginning in 2014 where self-employed people and small businesses could pool together to shop for health care coverage.

To pay for the changes, the legislation includes more than $400 billion in higher taxes over a decade, roughly half of it from a new Medicare payroll tax on individuals with incomes over $200,000 and couples over $250,000.

Ludacris And Jamie Foxx Target African-American Youth In Social Media Push Against HIV

Publicado

USAToday: Actor Jamie Foxx and recording artist Chris "Ludacris" Bridges today join the ranks of celebrities who have lent their popularity to push HIV prevention as part of a social media effort targeting young African Americans.

The "i know" campaign is sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which aims to draw thousands of young people into a conversation about HIV using Facebook, Twitter, text messages and a website (actagainstaids.org). It launches today with an event at Clark Atlanta University that will be webcast to students nationwide.

If it works as the CDC hopes, young African Americans will no longer be passive consumers of HIV-prevention messages. Instead, they'll become vocal advocates armed with information that will help them protect themselves and one another from HIV, says Kevin Fenton, director of the CDC's national center of HIV/AIDS prevention. "We're trying to create a movement," Fenton says.

The initiative is part of a five-year, $45 million effort called Act Against AIDS, announced last year at the White House. The broader effort was designed to "refocus attention on the HIV epidemic here at home" after years of addressing the crisis in Africa and elsewhere, says Robert Bailey II of the CDC.

Public health officials say one of their biggest challenges is to shatter the complacency bred by the misconception that, thanks to effective treatment, HIV is no longer an emergency.

The AIDS virus continues to spread widely among African Americans, who represent just 14% of Americans ages 13-29 but account for half of new infections in that group, the CDC reports. Young black gay and bisexual men account for 55% of infections among African Americans in that age group, the CDC says.

Yet the number of young blacks who say they're concerned about HIV declined from 50% to 40% from 1997 to 2009, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Tina Hoff, who leads Kaiser's efforts to convey prevention messages through the entertainment industry and social media, says Internet networking can raise awareness, but only as part of a comprehensive strategy.

Last fall, the foundation set out to bolster the White House initiative with its Greater Than AIDS campaign, launched with the Black AIDS Institute, MTV, BET, Essence and other media enterprises. What's needed, Hoff says, is a "collective response" in the African-American community: "Building a social network is a useful component of that."

Tiger Woods admits 'living life of a lie' in stunning first TV interview

Publicado

Disgraced golf great Tiger Woods admits he was "living life of a lie" - and hurting "a lot of people" - in a stunning and frank interview that aired Sunday night.
The golf legend apologized for carrying on affairs with more than a dozen women in a sit-down interview with ESPN.
"I was living a life of a lie, I really was. And I was doing a lot of things that hurt a lot of people," he said.
"And stripping away denial and rationalization, you start coming to the truth of who you really are and that can be very ugly," he said.
Woods said he can't wait to get back to the links at next month's Masters tournament in Georgia.
"I'm excited to get back and play," he said.
But he admitted to some butteflies.
"I'm a little nervous about that to be honest with you. It would be nice to hear a couple claps here and there," he said.
The ESPN interview took place at an undisclosed location near his mansion in suburban Orlando, Fla.
Woods took questions from a reporter for the first time since the scandal broke last November.
He also spoke to the Golf Channel in an interveiw that aired at the same time.
The cheating scandal first exploded into the public eye last Thanksgiving when Woods crashed his SUV outside his home.
Reports soon surfaced of affairs with a tawdry collection of pin-up models and party girls.
Woods' wife, Scandinavian stunner Elin Nordegren, has been living separately from him with their two children.
The golfer has stayed in seclusion ever since and attended sex addiction therapy at a clinic in Mississippi.
The therapy has made him stronger, he said.
"When you face it and you start conquering it and you start living up to it, the strength that I feel now. I've never felt that type of strength," he said.

Though he mostly cruised for 12 rounds before landing a vicious left hand that knocked Eddie Chambers through the ropes and out in the waning seconds of the bout, Wladimir Klitschko got the best test he's had in years today in Germany.

Klitschko (54-3, 48 KO) was leading 109-100 on the Bad Left Hook card, and probably was up by that score or 110-99 on most cards. Before the 11th and 12th rounds, he was berated by trainer Emanuel Steward for not being aggressive enough. Steward referred to it as "another Ibragimov," meaning that because Wladimir wasn't aggressive, he would have to "settle" for a dominant decision, rather than something for the highlight reels.

Steward was being a bit dramatic, as this was nowhere near the stinker of Klitschko-Ibragimov or Klitschko-Chagaev, but before the 12th, Klitschko snapped back that he would do it. And do it he did. The official time of the stoppage was 2:55 of the 12th round.

Chambers (35-2, 18 KO) had a great gameplan early, but he just wasn't good enough to beat Klitschko. Not big enough, not good enough, not powerful enough, and really, not quite fast enough, despite that being his chief strength. He couldn't outbox Wladimir.

Early in the bout, Chambers attempted to get into Klitschko's head first by picking him up off of his feet, and then in the next round by actually picking him up and slamming him to the mat. But Klitschko rattled only a bit, and quickly got past it. After that, he put on his usual clinic.

Overall, it was a more aggressive performance than usual for the world heavyweight champion. He dealt with Chambers very well, disposing of yet another challenger. Who's next? Who knows? But whoever it is, Wladimir Klitschko reigns clearly as the king of the heavyweights at this point, at least for my money.

Teen Arrested In Wal-Mart Racial Announcement Incident

Publicado

CNN Reports:

Police in New Jersey arrested a teenager in connection with a public-address-system announcement telling "all blacks" to leave a Wal-Mart store, a police spokesman said.
The 16-year-old boy is from Atlantic County, New Jersey, said deputy police chief John Dalesandro of the Washington Township Police Department. The suspect was arrested Friday in Atlantic County on bias intimidation and harassment charges, police said in a statement Saturday. He is in custody of his parents, police said.
Gloucester County prosecutors say that shortly before 5 p.m. on March 14, an unidentified male accessed the public address system at the Turnersville, New Jersey, Wal-Mart Supercenter Store. "All blacks need to leave the store," the voice announced. Store management contacted the Washington Township Police Department, which opened an investigation in conjunction with the county prosecutor's office, Dalesandro said.
Wal-Mart corporate spokesman Lorenzo Lopez said the company is "just as appalled by this as anyone."
He emphasized that Wal-Mart, the world's largest public corporation, is working with law enforcement officials.
"Whoever did this is wrong and acted in an inappropriate manner," Lopez said. "Clearly this is unacceptable."
Law enforcement officials said that Wal-Mart is now acting to limit the public address feature to a smaller number of in-store telephones.
Lopez has confirmed that the New Jersey store is updating its intercom systems and that the company is looking at Sunday's episode to see if there are any lessons for the retailer's other 4,000-plus American stores.
