Explosion Rocks Nuclear Plant in Japan

Publicado  March 12, 2011

IWAKI, Japan – An explosion at a nuclear power station Saturday destroyed a building housing the reactor amid fears that it was close to a disastrous meltdown after being hit by a powerful earthquake and tsunami.

Friday's double disaster, which pulverized Japan's northeastern coast, has left 574 people dead by official count, although local media reports said at least 1,300 people may have been killed.

Tokyo Power Electric Co., the utility that runs the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant, said four workers had suffered fractures and bruises and were being treated at a hospital. A nuclear expert said a meltdown may not pose widespread danger.

Footage on Japanese TV showed that the walls of the reactor's building had crumbled, leaving only a skeletal metal frame standing. Puffs of smoke were spewing out of the plant in Fukushima, 20 miles (30 kilometers) from Iwaki.

"We are now trying to analyze what is behind the explosion," said government spokesman Yukio Edano, stressing that people should quickly evacuate a six-mile (10-kilometer) radius. "We ask everyone to take action to secure safety."

The trouble began at the plant's Unit 1 after the massive 8.9-magnitude earthquake and the tsunami it spawned knocked out power there. According to official figures, 586 people are missing and 1,105 injured. In addition, police said between 200 and 300 bodies were found along the coast in Sendai, the biggest city in the area near the quake's epicenter.

Massive quake, tsunami slam Japan (Update:At least 1,000 feared dead after Japan quake)

Publicado

TOKYO – TOKYO (AP) — A powerful tsunami spawned by the largest earthquake in Japan's recorded history slammed the eastern coast Friday, sweeping away boats, cars, homes and people as widespread fires burned out of control. Tsunami warnings blanketed the entire Pacific, as far away as South America, Canada, Alaska and the entire U.S. West Coast.

Authorities said at least 32 people were killed. The magnitude 8.9 offshore quake was followed by at least 19 aftershocks, most of them of more than magnitude 6.0. Dozens of cities and villages along a 1,300-mile (2,100-kilometer) stretch of coastline were shaken by violent tremors that reached as far away as Tokyo, hundreds of miles (kilometers) from the epicenter.

A utility company in northeastern Japan reported a fire in a turbine building of nuclear power plant.

"The earthquake has caused major damage in broad areas in northern Japan," Prime Minister Naoto Kan said at a news conference.

Even for a country used to earthquakes, this one was of horrific proportions. It unleashed a 23-foot (7-meter) tsunami that swept boats, cars, buildings and tons of debris miles inland.

Large fishing boats and other sea vessels rode high waves into the cities, slamming against overpasses. Upturned and partially submerged vehicles were seen bobbing in the water.

Waves of muddy waters swept over farmland near the city of Sendai, carrying buildings, some on fire, inland as cars attempted to drive away. Sendai airport, north of Tokyo, was inundated with cars, trucks, buses and thick mud deposited over its runways. Fires spread through a section of the city, public broadcaster NHK reported.

The tsunami roared over embankments, washing anything in its path inland before reversing directions and carrying the cars, homes and other debris out to sea. Flames shot from some of the houses, probably because of burst gas pipes.

"Our initial assessment indicates that there has already been enormous damage," Chief government spokesman Yukio Edano said. "We will make maximum relief effort based on that assessment."

He said the Defense Ministry was sending troops to the quake-hit region. A utility aircraft and several helicopters were on the way.

A large fire erupted at the Cosmo oil refinery in Ichihara city in Chiba prefecture near Tokyo and was burning out of control with 100-foot (30 meter) -high flames whipping into the sky.

In northeastern Japan's Miyagi prefecture, a fire broke out in a turbine building of a nuclear power plant. Smoke was observed coming out of the building, which is separate from the plant's reactor, and the cause is under investigation, said Tohoku Electric Power Co. the company said.

There have been no reports of radioactive leaks or injuries, the company said. Several nuclear plants elsewhere along the coast were also partially shut down, with no reports of leakage.

Also from Miyagi prefecture, NHK showed footage of a large ship being swept away and ramming directly into a breakwater in Kesennuma city.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the 2:46 p.m. quake was a magnitude 8.9, the biggest earthquake to hit Japan since officials began keeping records in the late 1800s.

A tsunami warning was extended to a number of Pacific, Southeast Asian and Latin American nations, including Japan, Russia, Indonesia, New Zealand and Chile. In the Philippines, authorities said they expect a 3-foot (1-meter) high tsunami.

The quake struck at a depth of six miles (10 kilometers), about 80 miles (125 kilometers) off the eastern coast, the agency said. The area is 240 miles (380 kilometers) northeast of Tokyo.

Tokyo's main airport was closed. A large section of the ceiling at the 1-year-old airport at Ibaraki, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) northeast of Tokyo, fell to the floor with a powerful crash.

The Forbes Five Hip-Hop’s Wealthiest Artists: 50 Cent , Diddy & Jay-Z Made It

Publicado

The five men who made the Forbes Five Hip-Hop’s Wealthiest Artists list have all clearly worked hard to achieve their riches.

Taking the money they have earned from hip hop and flipping it into other ventures like Ciroc for Diddy, or Jay-Z's 40/40 clubs or 50 Cent's Cheetah Vision Films has allowed these gentlemen to go from the hood to the boardroom.

Check out the full list below.

1. Diddy ($475 million)
2. Jay-Z ($450 million)
3. Dr. Dre ($125 million0
4. 50 Cent ($100 million)
5. Birdman ($100 million)

I think 50 is worth probably 4 times what this list indicates, but check out the criteria they listed to come to these figures.

In order to form the list, we followed the same procedures we use to calculate the list of the world’s billionaires (released today) — valuing current holdings, looking at past earnings, leafing through financial documents and talking to a bevy of analysts, attorneys, managers and other industry players to find the nitty-gritty details. We considered only performers, which is why hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons isn’t on this list.

Though other hip-hop artists including Lil Wayne, Pharrell Williams and others — not to mention pop sensation Bruno Mars, who penned Travie McCoy’s hit song “Billionaire” — frequently speak of ten-figure desires, we kept our list to five because of the lack of information available on the fortunes under $100 million.

Rare photos of Hitler's wife

Publicado

Adolf Hitler is one of the darkest figures of the 20th century. But less is known about his girlfriend, Eva Braun, who he kept secret from Nazi Germany for years.

Pictures of the girlfriend and then wife have recently surfaced through Life Magazine, brought to light through collector and curator Reinhard Schulz.

The cache of photos from the young model's personal album was confiscated in 1945 by the American army. The newly released pictures have caused searches on the Web for "eva braun" to rise over 300% in one day.

So who was the woman by Hitler's side? Young Eva first met Hitler in 1929 when he was a rising star in the Nazi party. He was introduced to the 17-year-old as Herr Wolff, while she modeled for the official Nazi photographer Heinrich Hoffmann in Munich.

The Bavarian became Hitler's companion, despite being kept hidden from the public and often left alone. A depressive, she attempted suicide twice, but still remained loyal to Hitler to the end.

After learning about the failed plot to kill Hitler, Braun wrote him, "From our first meeting I swore to follow you anywhere even unto death. I live only for your love."

In the last days of the war, just before they ended their lives, she became his wife. Braun committed suicide with Hitler at the age of 33.

The unearthed photos show a woman frolicking in the Bavarian Alps with some of the most infamous characters of the Third Reich. One of the images from the Life slideshow that is making waves shows Braun in blackface, dressed up apparently as American actor Al Jolson, who starred in the 1927 movie "The Jazz Singer."

Maybe not surprisingly, the photos of Hitler's longtime companion do not cast her in the most positive light. As the Daily Telegraph put it, "Miss Braun appears as a rather vain and frivolous character."

Color pics of San Francisco after 1906 quake found

Publicado

SAN FRANCISCO – A museum volunteer has unearthed what the Smithsonian Institution believes to be the first — and perhaps only — color photographs of San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake and fire that nearly leveled the city.

The six never-published images were snapped by photography innovator Frederick Eugene Ives several months after the April 1906 "Great Quake," the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Most were taken from the roof of the hotel where Ives stayed during an October 1906 visit.

They were stowed amid other items donated by Ives' son, Herbert, and discovered in 2009 by National Museum of American History volunteer Anthony Brooks while he was cataloguing the collection.

Although hand-colored photographs of the quake's destruction have surfaced before, Ives' work is probably the only true color documentary evidence, Shannon Perich, associate curator of the Smithsonian's photography history collection, told the Chronicle.

She says Ives was one of only a few photographers experimenting with color photography in the early 20th century and that his San Francisco images were meant to be viewed through a 3-D device he invented but which never became a commercial success.

The pictures are street-level shots of San Francisco's shattered downtown and rooftop views overlooking miles of ruins. They depict buildings damaged by fire and broken by the shaking ground. Some of the buildings still exist.

The process he used to produce color images, creating separate slides for each primary color in the light spectrum, required a long exposure and therefore was not conducive to capturing people and objects in motion.

Born Christopher Wallace in Brooklyn, NY, the man known as Biggie, Big Poppa and Biggie Smalls to fans is known throughout the world as The Notorious B.I.G. – and we’re counting down some of his greatest music videos in remembrance.

The life of one of the greatest rappers of all time, The Notorious B.I.G. came to an end on this day 14 years ago.

Christopher Wallace was born on May 21st, 1972 in the Bed Stuy section of Brooklyn, New York. A high school drop out and local drug dealer, Wallace turned to music as his salvation for a better life. After catching the attention of producer Sean ‘Puff Daddy’ Combs, he signed a record deal with his music label Bad Boy records.

Wallace took on the stage name of The Notorious B.I.G. and electrified fans with his unique lyrical style. He continued to grow in fame in the mid 90s, so much so that he was one of the main parties involved in the infamous coastal rap war and more personally, rapper/actor Tupac Shakur. Wallace would eventually lose his life, along with Shakur, to gun violence at the age of 24.

His hit songs, “Big Poppa”, “Hypnotize” and “Mo Money, Mo Problems” were all GRAMMY nominated songs and his album Life After Death was nominated for Best Rap Album in 1998.

Wallace’s legacy continues to grow well after his death for not only being a great rapper, but also a proud New Yorker.

Eliminating $1 Bills Could Save Billions

Publicado

Washington has come down with a case of fiscal fever as the Obama administration proposes everything from spending freezes on domestic programs to selling off unused government property to bring the budget back in line. Now, one study argues that the government can save billions of dollars simply by making a change to the currency itself.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Government Accountability Office issued a formal proposal to the Treasury and Federal Reserve noting that if it eliminated the $1 bill and replaced it with the $1 coin, the country could save roughly $5.5 billion during the next 30 years. The reason, according to the agency's report, is that dollar bills have a shorter lifespan than dollar coins because they wear much faster, which in turn requires the government to spend more to print new bills.

The GAO estimates that phasing out dollar bills in favor of coins would require a four-year transition period, during which the government invests in the new currency, but following that, the government would save an expected $522 million each year from the change.

18 Men And Boys Arrested So Far In Connection With Brutal Gang-Rape Of 11 Year Old Texas Girl

Publicado

(CNN) - Thirteen adults and five juveniles have been arrested as part of an investigation into the alleged rape of a Texas girl, police said.

Darrell Broussard, assistant police chief for the Cleveland, Texas, police department, said Monday that the investigation into the incident "is continuous," with more significant developments possible. Cleveland is about 50 miles northeast of Houston.

"There have been leads during our investigation that have alerted us to other possible persons of interest," Broussard told CNN. "The investigation is ongoing."

The 18 individuals charged thus far are between 14 and 27 years old, he said.

On Friday, the Cleveland police department announced that four students in the Cleveland independent school district had been arrested on charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child under 14.

They appeared Monday in a Liberty County court, in the town of Liberty, to face the charges.

Police noted that some but not all suspects are students at Cleveland High School, though all those named thus far are from the town.

Mike Little, the district attorney in Liberty County, said police would likely decide whether more people would be charged. He offered few other details, saying, "We are very careful about pretrial publicity."

The incident allegedly happened late last year in Cleveland. The case has sharply divided the community, according to CNN affiliate KHOU, which reported the girl was 11 years old.

"It just seems like a dream," said Sherry Fletcher, whose 20-year-old son Devo Shaun Green is among those charged according to Cleveland police. "I just hope everything comes out well, because some of these kids are innocent."

Those adults arrested and charged with sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony in Texas, could face 25 year to life in prison if convicted, according to the police department.

How Old Dominion’s mascot delayed Monday’s CAA title game

Old Dominion's mascot has probably done his last LeBron James imitation for a while.

Before tipoff of Monday night's Colonial Athletic Association title game between Old Dominion and Virginia Commonwealth, Monarchs mascot "Big Blue" did a LeBron-esque powder toss underneath one of the baskets. Unfortunately, the baby powder on the court created a slick enough surface that referees stopped play after VCU's Ed Nixon slipped on a layup attempt in the opening two minutes and careened into a baseline sign board.

Everyone from ball boys to suit-and-tie-clad tournament officials spent nearly 10 minutes wiping that portion of the floor with mops and hand towels. Only after referees and players from both teams tested the floor did play finally resume.

Warner Bros. Officially FIRES Charlie Sheen + Charlie Reacts by Going on top of Live Nation Building in Beverly Hills Waving A Machete & Drinking Tiger Blood

Publicado  March 8, 2011

TMZ has obtained a letter Warner Bros. sent to Charlie Sheen's lawyer, stating Charlie was being terminated because he committed a felony involving "moral turpitude."

In the 11-page letter, obtained from sources connected to Charlie, Warner Bros. states, "Your client has been engaged in dangerously self-destructive conduct and appears to be very ill."

The letter then goes on to describe Charlie's hijinks, including trashing the Plaza Hotel in NYC, coke binges, on-set failures because of drug fatigue, and diatribes against "Two and a Half Men" creator Chuck Lorre.
The letter also notes that Charlie derailed production when he went into rehab, and then he fired his sobriety coach. In fact, Warner Bros. claims it was so concerned about Charlie's well-being, "Warner Bros. had an airplane waiting" to take him to a treatment facility ... but Charlie would have none of it.

As for why Charlie got fired, the letter says there is a clause in his contract saying they can fire a performer who commits "a felony offense involving moral turpitude."
The letter says, "There is ample evidence supporting Warner Bros. reasonable good faith opinion that Mr. Sheen has committed felony offenses involving moral turpitude (including but not limited to furnishing of cocaine to others as part of the self-destructive lifestyle he has described publicly) that have 'interfere[d] with his ability to fully and completely render all material services required' under the agreement."
In short, that's why Charlie was fired.

Charlie's lawyer, Marty Singer, has demanded Warner Bros. pay Charlie for the eight canceled episodes -- or else.

Warner Bros. seems undaunted by the threat, even reserving its right to take legal action against Charlie.

NASA scientist finds evidence of alien life

Publicado  March 6, 2011

Aliens exist, and we have proof.

That astonishingly awesome claim comes from Dr. Richard B. Hoover, an astrobiologist at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, who says he has found conclusive evidence of alien life — fossils of bacteria found in an extremely rare class of meteorite called CI1 carbonaceous chondrites. (There are only nine such meteorites on planet Earth.) Hoover’s findings were published late Friday night in the Journal of Cosmology, a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

“I interpret it as indicating that life is more broadly distributed than restricted strictly to the planet earth,” Hoover, who has spent more than 10 years studying meteorites around the world, told FoxNews.com in an interview. “This field of study has just barely been touched — because quite frankly, a great many scientist would say that this is impossible.”

Hoover discovered the fossils by breaking apart the CI1 meteorite, and analyzing the exposed rock with a scanning-electron microscope and a field emission electron-scanning microscope, which allowed him to detect any fossil remains. What he found were fossils of micro-organisms, many of which he says are strikingly similar to those found on our own planet.

“The exciting thing is that they are in many cases recognizable and can be associated very closely with the generic species here on earth,” said Hoover. Some of the fossils, however, are quite odd. “There are some that are just very strange and don’t look like anything that I’ve been able to identify, and I’ve shown them to many other experts that have also come up stump.”

In order to satisfy the inevitable hoard of buzz-killing skeptics, Hoover’s study and evidence were made available to his peers in the scientific community in advance of the study’s publications, giving them a chance to thoroughly dissect his findings. Comments from those who decided to sift through the evidence will be published online, alongside the study.

“Given the controversial nature of his discovery, we have invited 100 experts and have issued a general invitation to over 5,000 scientists from the scientific community to review the paper and to offer their critical analysis,” writes Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics scientist Dr. Rudy Schild, who serves as the Journal of Cosmology’s editor-in-chief. “No other paper in the history of science has undergone such a thorough vetting, and never before in the history of science has the scientific community been given the opportunity to critically analyze an important research paper before it is published.”

While the Journal of Cosmology says that “no other paper in the history of science has undergone such a thorough vetting,” some highly respected names in the scientific community are challenging the validity of Cosmology, and the findings of Dr. Hoover.

“[The Journal of Cosmology] isn’t a real science journal at all,” says PZ Meyers in Science Blogs, “but is the ginned-up website of a small group of crank academics obsessed with the idea of Hoyle and Wickramasinghe that life originated in outer space and simply rained down on Earth.”

Mother Outraged After Her 5th Grade Son Is Made To Take Part In Mock Slave Auction At School ''People Were Bidding On People''

Publicado

Administrators at Gahanna's Chapelfield Elementary School apologized yesterday to the mother of a black fifth-grader who was forced to play the part of a slave in a classroom exercise.

A spokeswoman for Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools said the lesson was intended to teach students about history and cultural diversity.

Wednesday's incident came to light in an e-mail to WBNS-TV.

"As soon as the concern was brought to our attention, school officials acted promptly to speak with the parent," district spokeswoman Mary Otting said yesterday in a statement.

"The Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools values diversity and its families."

District officials declined to discuss the incident in detail, but a reporter was at the student's home when his mother, Aneka Burton, received a phone call from Chapelfield Principal Scott Schmidt.

"I apologize for that," Schmidt told Burton. "I will definitely make sure it doesn't happen again. It was never our intent to cause harm."

The district didn't name the teacher in the statement released yesterday.

Burton said her son, Nikko, 10, "felt degraded" by the exercise.

She said Nikko told her after school on Wednesday that a teacher had divided students into two groups: "masters" and "slaves."

Burton's son said in an interview that the students' roles were determined by random drawing.

He said the only other black child in the class, a girl, ended up in the masters group.

The boy said the students in the slaves group were offered for sale in a simulated auction

"At first, I didn't care," he said. "But after people were bidding on people, it kind of made me a little mad and stuff."

He said he became even angrier when students playing prospective buyers were told to feel the muscles of the students playing slaves.

"They took the bigger ones first," Burton said, recounting what her son told her.

"They looked in their mouth to see who had stronger teeth. And whoever was the strongest that's who they sold first."

Burton said that when her son balked at being "sold," the teacher told him to return to his desk.

"He was hurt, and the kids picked on him later."

Burton said that although she appreciates Schmidt's apology, she thinks school officials need a better understanding of the lesson they apparently were trying to convey.

"They should research - they should be educated about black history," she said. "That was inappropriate."

Yesterday, after school, her son said he hadn't gotten an apology from the teacher, and the district didn't respond to an inquiry about possible disciplinary action.

"It was kind of mean," he said, "and she should have said, 'Sorry.'

Shocking tragedy at end of HS game

Publicado

Tragedy struck Western Michigan on Thursday night when Fennville (Mich.) High basketball star Wes Leonard hit a game-winning shot in a 57-55, overtime victory over Bridgman (Mich.) High, then collapsed on the court while celebrating the victory and was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly thereafter.

According to the Associated Press, Leonard, who you can see making the game-winning shot above, was celebrating his game-winning layup with the rest of his teammates when he collapsed to the ground. Paramedics tried CPR on the star at the site and in the ambulance, but he was pronounced dead upon reaching nearby Holland Hospital.

On Friday, Ottawa County medical examiner David Start's autopsy determined that Leonard died of cardiac arrest due to an enlarged heart. While Start said that athletics could have played a role in causing that heart attack, he also said it would be difficult to prove that was the case.

"Thirty seconds earlier, he was laying in the winning bucket," Fennville coach Ryan Klingler told the Associated Press. "And then 10 seconds later … everything’s pulled out from under you, from out of nowhere."
