Fuselage hole forces Southwest emergency landing

Publicado  April 2, 2011

PHOENIX – A "gunshot-like sound" woke Brenda Reese as her Southwest Airlines flight cruised at 36,000 feet. Looking up, she could see the sky through a hole torn in the cabin roof.

The Boeing 737 lost cabin pressure after the hole developed Friday, prompting frightened passengers to grope for oxygen masks as the plane made a terrifying but "controlled descent."

A passenger called it "pandemonium." Another watched as a flight attendant and another passenger passed out, apparently for lack of oxygen, their heads striking the seats in front of them.

Officials said Flight 812 lost pressure because of a fuselage rupture. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said the pilot made a "controlled descent from 36,000 feet to 11,000 feet altitude."

His safe emergency landing at a military base in Yuma, about 150 miles southwest of Phoenix, drew applause from relieved passengers.

No serious injuries were reported among the 118 people aboard but a flight attendant was slightly hurt, according to Southwest Airlines. The cause of the hole was not immediately known. The FBI called it a "mechanical failure," not an act of terror or other foul play.

Reese said the plane had just left Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport for Sacramento, Calif., when the "gunshot-like sound" woke her up. She said oxygen masks dropped as the plane dove.

Seated one row from the rupture, Don Nelson said it took about four noisy minutes for the plane to dip to less than 10,000 feet. "You could tell there was an oxygen deficiency," he said.

"People were dropping," said Christine Ziegler, a 44-year-old project manager from Sacramento who watched as the crew member and a passenger nearby faint. Nelson and Ziegler spoke after a substitute flight took them on to Sacramento.

Reese described the hole as "at the top of the plane, right up above where you store your luggage."

"The panel's not completely off," she told The Associated Press. "It's like ripped down, but you can see completely outside... When you look up through the panel, you can see the sky."

Cellphone photographs provided by Reese showed a panel hanging open in a section above the plane's middle aisle, with a hole of about six feet long.

The National Transportation Safety Board said an "in-flight fuselage rupture" led to the drop in cabin pressure aboard the 15-year-old plane. A similar incident on a Southwest plane to Baltimore in July 2009 also forced an emergency landing when a foot-long hole opened in the cabin.

Four months earlier, the Dallas-based airline had agreed to pay $7.5 million to settle charges that it operated planes that had missed required safety inspections for cracks in the fuselage. The airline, which flies Boeing 737s, inspected nearly 200 of its planes back then, found no cracks and put them back in the sky.

Julie O'Donnell, an aviation safety spokeswoman for Seattle-based Boeing Commercial Airplanes, confirmed "a hole in the fuselage and a depressurization event" in the latest incident but declined to speculate on what caused it.

Reese said passengers applauded the pilot after he emerged from the cockpit following the emergency landing at Yuma Marine Corps Air Station/International Airport.

"It was unreal. Everybody was like they were high school chums," Ziegler said, describing a scene in which passengers comforted and hugged each other after the plane was on the ground.

"I fly a lot. This is the first time I ever had something like this happen," said Reese, a 37-year-old single mother of three who is vice president for a clinical research organization. "I just want to get home and hold my kids."

Gregor said an FAA inspector from Phoenix was en route to Yuma. The NTSB said it also was sending a crew to Yuma.

Holes in aircraft can be caused by metal fatigue or lightning. The National Weather Service said the weather was clear from the Phoenix area to the California border on Friday afternoon.

In 1988, cracks caused part of the roof of an Aloha Airlines Boeing 737 to peel open while the jet flew from Hilo to Honolulu. A flight attendant was sucked out of the plane and plunged to her death, and dozens of passengers were injured.

Three years ago, an exploding oxygen cylinder ripped a gaping hole the fuselage of a Qantas Boeing 747-438 carrying 365 people. The plane descended thousands of feet with the loss of cabin pressure and flew about 300 miles to Manila, where it made a successful emergency landing. No one was injured.

Former NBA Star Dominique Wilkins Gets Into Fight With Suit Designer Over Unpaid Debt Inside Arena

Publicado

During his playing days, Dominique Wilkins was known as the 'Human Highlight Film'......none of his highlights were quite like this however.

A bizarre incident at Philips Arena left Hawks legend Dominque Wilkins fending off an attacker at Thursday night's game.

Police said after Wednesday night's Atlanta-Orlando game at Philips Arena, while Wilkins was doing a live television broadcast, Rashan Michel started cursing at him. After the broadcast, Wilkins began walking across the basketball court, when Michel began following him.

Investigators said a Philips Arena security officer tried to stop Michel, grabbing his arm. Police said Michel started swinging his arm and hit the officer and Wilkins.

Michel, an ex-referee and clothing store owner, has been charged with one count of simple battery. Witnesses say he accused Wilkins of owing him money for suits purchased several years back.

According to police, Michel said he had made dress suits for Wilkins for $17,000. Police said Wilkins would not confirm Michel's allegations.

A MySpace page for Michel shows the suit maker posing with a number of NBA stars, President Barack Obama, and others.

Michel bonded out of the Fulton County Jail around 2 a.m. Thursday on a $1,000 bond.

Hawks vice president of public relations Arthur Triche said the team was aware of the altercation and the suspect's arrest, but had no additional comment.

Michel appeared on V103's Frank and Wanda Morning Show Thursday morning.

He said he had filed suit against Wilkins about three months ago, saying he was owed about $13,000.

Michel said he told Wilkins that he could take his time paying him, since Wilkins faced some family issues. Michel said he went to the arena Wednesday night to discuss the matter, but all of a sudden, he said, Wilkins punched him first. In addition, Michel said he had contacted a lawyer over the matter.

Largely unseen photos of MLK's killer unveiled

Publicado  April 1, 2011

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Long-forgotten photos that show James Earl Ray being brought to jail after his arrest for assassinating Martin Luther King Jr. were unveiled Wednesday to commemorate the 43rd anniversary of the civil rights leader's death.

Dozens of the striking black-and-white photos, along with letters Ray wrote from jail and other documents, were found in 2007 among old county records in a warehouse in east Memphis, Shelby County Register Tom Leatherwood said. A few photos were posted on The Commercial Appeal's website to accompany a story published Wednesday, and Leatherwood planned to make the rest available on a county website later in the day.

One of the photos shows Ray being patted down by an officer with his back to the camera and his arms spread out wide. Another shows the bespectacled Ray being led into the jail in handcuffs, wearing what appears to be a bullet-proof vest.

Leatherwood said the documents don't offer any startling new revelations about the assassination, but do provide a detailed snapshot of a pivotal moment in the nation's civil rights history. Most were never seen by the public. Leatherwood tried for about three years to make them available, and the county attorney approved their release six weeks ago, he told The Associated Press.

Then-Shelby County Sheriff Bill Morris had the photos taken to document that Ray wasn't being mistreated when he was booked into the jail for the April 4, 1968, shooting death of King in Memphis. Ray was arrested about two months after the shooting.

Ray died in prison in 1998, but he had signed a document authorizing their release in the late 1970s, Leatherwood said.

"I hope they rekindle the memory of the civil rights movement," Leatherwood told the AP. "A lot of the memories of the civil rights movement are being lost or people are taking the civil rights movement for granted. People did sacrifice their lives to that movement.

"Of course, Dr. King is the perfect example of that," Leatherwood said.

The photos were taken by Memphis photographer Gil Michael, who was an employee of Memphis State University at the time. One picture showing Morris escorting Ray into the jail was given to the news media. The other photos were sealed, and the sheriff's office kept the negatives.

Letters Ray wrote to his lawyers and family from the Shelby County Jail, where he spent eight months before pleading guilty, also were part of the newly-seen documents. So are investigators' notes; a hand-drawn map of the Lorraine Motel where King was killed; and an article from Reader's Digest entitled "Greatest Manhunt in Law Enforcement History."

The archive also includes photos of Sirhan Sirhan, who assassinated Sen. Robert F. Kennedy. They were acquired by Morris in 1968 as he researched security techniques.

Morris said he didn't want Ray killed while he was sheriff.

"On April the 4th, 1968, our whole culture of life in Memphis changed," Morris told the newspaper. "Everything changed."

Arnold Schwarzenegger returns as ‘The Governator’

Publicado

Arnold Schwarzenegger dropped plenty of hints about what he wanted to do after two tumultuous terms as governor of California. Among other things, he slyly suggested he might like to work for President Obama. He even hinted he'd like to reboot the "Terminator" franchise that made him famous.

But in the end, Schwarzenegger is settling for what he hopes is an even more iconic job: cartoon superhero. The former governor tells Entertainment Weekly he's developing an animated TV show and comic book series called "The Governator," based on--you guessed it--an ex-governor who moonlights as a secret superhero crime fighter.

"It takes my entire career, if it's body building, if it's acting, if it's the governorship and combines it into one," Schwarzenegger tells EW in a video posted on the magazine's site. "The Governator is designed to fight crime, to fight natural disasters … this guy will jump and solve the problems."

We can imagine how some eager junior executive might have pitched the project in a studio confab: It's "The Incredibles" meets Schwarzenegger's 2003 recall campaign meets the California budget crisis. And just think of the merchandising back-end—action figures, DVDs, the works!

And that doesn't seem too far off the mark, to judge by what EW is reporting. The former governor is developing the project with comic book legend and Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee, who tells EW that the project will incorporate all aspects of Schwarzenegger's real life. That includes his wife, journalist Maria Shriver--who Schwarzenegger admitted hadn't yet been told of the project. "I think it will be a big surprise for her," he tells EW.

According to Lee, The Governator leaves office and decides to build a "secret high-tech crime-fighting center" under his house in the tony L.A. suburb of Brentwood, where Schwarzenegger lives in real life. Like Batman, the animated Schwarzenegger will have a hideout--"the Arnold Cave"--and team of colorful sidekicks. One is Zeke Muckerberg, who--like the character's obvious inspiration, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg--is a computer whiz who acts as The Governator's cybersecurity expert.

But what's a comic-book superhero without some powerful super-villains? According to EW, the animated Arnold will face off with an evil organization called "Gangsters Imposters Racketeers Liars & Irredeemable Ex-cons"--or, as you might better recognize them, GIRLIE Men, for short.

"I love the idea of a control center below my house with a path so that boats and submarines can go right into the ocean," Schwarzenegger excitedly told EW. "In the cartoon, my house is much closer to the beach than where we live, but, you know, it's a cartoon."

The former governor insists that being a cartoon superhero is the next best thing to being President of the United States--a goal that's legally blocked to him since he wasn't born in America.

"Otherwise, I wouldn't be standing here in a leather jacket, I'd be dressed up in a suit," Schwarzenegger said.

Street Drummer Files Lawsuit Against MTV Over His Unauthorized Appearance In Nicki Minaj Documentary

Publicado

Billboard reports:
A camera-shy subway busker is suing MTV and its parent company Viacom in New Jersey Federal Court, claiming his privacy was violated and his reputation was tarnished when his image appeared on the documentary show "Nicki Minaj: My Time Now."

Street drummer Mike Alaska, whose real name is Michael Savely, appeared fleetingly during the opening of a show about the music and life of the Grammy-nominated rapper.

He claims that he was filmed by the show's producers in November 2010 and approached to sign a waiver. He refused, he says, because he was concerned that "the footage would misrepresent his connection with other artists whose style conflict with the one that he has developed."

Despite his refusal to grant permission to the music network, he says, his image appeared on the show in December 2010.

Savely, 26, who often sports a foot-high mohawk, says his business teaching drumming to children was damaged by his appearance on the show.

He also complained that the footage was blurry.

"Savely understands that the reason many of the parents of the students he teaches employ his services is because they can trust him to provide their children with something more modern yet not corrupt," according to the suit.

Minaj, 26, on the other hand, "dresses provocatively, uses profanity and glorifies a specific lifestyle," all of which is contrary to Savely's more "conservative" image, he says in court papers.

His image began to appear on the show in December 2010, after which his tutoring business and T-shirt sales went downhill, Savely says.

Despite the fact that Savely was drumming on a public subway platform, he claims MTV violated his privacy. When reached for comment, Savely requested money for his interview. Viacom declined to comment.

Spanish scientists search for fuel of the future

Publicado

ALICANTE, Spain (AFP) – In a forest of tubes eight metres high in eastern Spain scientists hope they have found the fuel of tomorrow: bio-oil produced with algae mixed with carbon dioxide from a factory.

Almost 400 of the green tubes, filled with millions of microscopic algae, cover a plain near the city of Alicante, next to a cement works from which the C02 is captured and transported via a pipeline to the "blue petroleum" factory.

The project, which is still experimental, has been developed over the past five years by Spanish and French researchers at the small Bio Fuel Systems (BFS) company.

At a time when companies are redoubling their efforts to find alternative energy sources, the idea is to reproduce and speed up a process which has taken millions of years and which has led to the production of fossil fuels.

"We are trying to simulate the conditions which existed millions of years ago, when the phytoplankton was transformed into oil," said engineer Eloy Chapuli. "In this way, we obtain oil that is the same as oil today."

The microalgae reproduces at high speed in the tubes by photosynthesis and from the CO2 released from the cement factory.

Every day some of this highly concentrated liquid is extracted and filtered to produce a biomass that is turned into bio-oil.

The other great advantage of the system is that it is a depollutant -- it absorbs the C02 which would otherwise be released into the atmosphere.

"It's ecological oil," said the founder and chairman of BFS, French engineer Bernard Stroiazzo-Mougin, who worked in oil fields in the Middle East before coming to Spain.

"We need another five to 10 years before industrial production can start," said Stroiazzo-Mougin, who hopes to be able to develop another such project on the Portuguese island of Madeira.

"In a unit that covers 50 square kilometres, which is not something enormous, in barren regions of southern Spain, we could produce about 1.25 million barrels per day," or almost as much as the daily export of oil from Iraq, he said.

BFS, a private company, hopes to negotiate "with several countries to obtain subsidies for the installation of artificial oil fields," he said.

Other similar projects being studied in other parts of the world.

In Germany, the Swedish energy group Vattenfall last year launched a pilot project in which algae is used to absorb carbon dioxide from a coal-fired power plant.

US oil giant ExxonMobil plans to invest up to $600 million in research on oil produced from algae.

Companies, in particular those in the aeronautic sector, have shown keen interest in this research, hoping to find a replacement for classic oil.

Rihanna Opens Up About Bedroom Antics For 'Rolling Stone': ''I Like Being Tied Up And Spanked''

Publicado  March 31, 2011

Rihanna opens up about a lit bit of everything in her Rolling Stone interview. The superstar speaks on her decision to ease the restraining order against Chris Brown, a memorable slap in the face by her father, and that her hit song 'S&M' was not only just a fun video but more of a portrait of her own sex life.

'I love feeling like I'm somebody's girl,' she tells Rolling Stone. 'I love to be tied up and spanked.'

The 23-year-old says that the single is semi-autobiographical, but says the lyrics 'Whips and chains excite me' doesn't quite work for her.

She adds: 'Using whips and chains is too planned... you have to stop and look for the whip. I prefer them to use their hands.'

'I like to take the reins in my life, but I enjoy being submissive in the bedroom. In there I can be a little lady and have a male who has responsibility for the situation. That's sexy.'

She partly blames her "masochistic" streak on the abuse she witnessed as a child.

When asked if her father was ever abusive toward her, Rihanna admitted to being hit "once" during a beach outing when she was seven.

"He slapped me so hard," she says. "I ran home with his handprint on me. I couldn't believe it. My mother saw my face, how traumatized I was. You know how, when you know you did something wrong, and you deserve to get beat? This was out of nowhere."

The singer also says that as a take-charge entertainer, she likes it when a man takes charge in bed.

Asked if she was dating anybody now, Rihanna replied no and added, "I'm not even sexting."

Rihanna, 23, became the poster girl for battered girlfriends everywhere two years ago when then-boyfriend - R & B singer Chris Brown - beat her up during a pre-Grammy Awards hellride through Hollywood.

"I hate that my business is out there," she says. "But at the same time, if the media had never found out about certain situations, I would still be in them."

The sultry songbird's public discussion of her private sexual preferences comes a week after Brown was forced to apologize for storming off the set at ABC's "Good Morning America."

Rihanna, who recently agreed to ease the restraining order against her ex-boyfriend, said she hasn't heard from Brown in a long time - and is fine with that.

Rihanna says she hasn’t heard from Chris Brown: “We don’t have to talk again ever in my life.” She says she agreed to lift the restraining order because she didn’t want to negatively affect Brown’s career. “Saying he has to be a hundred feet away from me, he can’t perform at awards shows — that definitely made it difficult for him.”

Lloyd Banks' 'So Forgetful' Video Inspired By 'Hangover'

Publicado

G-Unit rapper Lloyd Banks wants to bring listeners into the world of a rap star with his new video for "So Forgetful." MTV News caught up with the Queens MC on the set of the visual for the Ryan Leslie-produced track from his third album, H.F.M. 2 (Hunger for More 2), which was released late last year on G-Unit Records.

"The way we put the record together was kind of how the video is playing out," Banks said about the song's inception. "I stopped by the studio, [Leslie] was working on a few sounds, and he plays everything, from the drums to the keys. So, he basically started, and I just started writing the verses, and it came to life."

Leslie, a multitalented R&B artist, does double duty on "So Forgetful," producing the synth-heavy track and singing its hook. Leslie believes Banks' genuine perspective on the song — he raps about bagging models and forgetting how they met — makes it one of the album's better tracks.

"What's awesome about this record is that it's a real personal experience," Leslie said. "Brothers be on the road all the time, and we go to different cities, and it's hard to keep track of all the cities and everyone that we meet. Real rap is the best rap. The fact that he was drawing from personal experience to put this record together, I think that's what makes it ... a super strong one."

Banks added that the song's groove, and a certain Zach Galifianakis-starring movie, played an integral part in its creation too. "I believe in that when you building an album, every song should have a different mood," he said. "When I heard the certain notes that was played, it just brought me into the nightlife. It sound like something that I could enjoy, the fellas can enjoy as well as the ladies.

"Actually, I thought [of] the concept of movie ['The] Hangover.' I thought that was pretty dope how they had went away for the weekend and so many things happen and that was kind of like the metaphor. I was bringing them into the life of a rap star or an R&B star — what it would be like. Sometimes, you literally wake up and forgot how you got there."

7 NY state IT workers are Mega Millons winners

Publicado

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The seven state workers from the Albany, N.Y. area who won last week's $319 million Mega Millions jackpot may have gotten some extra luck from the patience and appetite of the man delegated to buy the winning ticket.

Mike Barth was at a newsstand in downtown Albany to buy the random Quick Pick ticket for the group when he decided to pick up a candy bar.

"I was at the counter. It was my turn to buy a ticket when I reached down to grab a Snickers bar from the candy display and someone reached over me, actually cut in front of me to buy a ticket," the 63-year-old from suburban Bethlehem said Thursday. "I thought about saying something but decided to just let it slide. I bought the next ticket."

On Friday night, Barth's co-worker Gabrielle Mahar, 29, of Colonie, learned that she and her fellow information technology workers at the state Division of Housing and Community Renewal had the winning numbers

"I was up late reading and wanted to catch the numbers but missed them. I was dialing up the Lottery website on my phone when the numbers scrolled across the screen. I was dumbfounded," she said.

Word spread quickly among the group.

When Leon Peck, 62, of Johnstown got the call Saturday morning, he assumed there must have been a problem at work.

"We're IT people. We get calls all the time about malfunctioning servers so I figured that was why my phone was ringing so early in the morning," he said.

Tracy Sussman, 41, of Colonie said she took the good news call after initially thinking, "What's wrong now?"

The other winners are John Hilton, 57, of North Greenbush; John Kutey, 54, of Green Island; Kristin Baldwin, 42, of Clifton Park.

The group said they haven't decided if they'll leave their state jobs, but they've got plans for things like buying a dishwasher, tires and college educations for their kids.

They're each collecting checks for $19.1 million after taxes.

The jackpot was the fifth-largest in the multistate game's history.

Ancient find has Bible experts 'dumbstruck' - Could lead codices prove ‘the major discovery of Christian history’?

Publicado

British archaeologists are seeking to authenticate what could be a landmark discovery in the documentation of early Christianity: a trove of 70 lead codices that appear to date from the 1st century CE, which may include key clues to the last days of Jesus' life. As UK Daily Mail reporter Fiona Macrae writes, some researchers are suggesting this could be the most significant find in Christian archeology since the Dead Sea scrolls in 1947.

The codices turned up five years ago in a remote cave in eastern Jordan—a region where early Christian believers may have fled after the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem in 70 CE. The codices are made up of wirebound individual pages, each roughly the size of a credit card. They contain a number of images and textual allusions to the Messiah, as well as some possible references to the crucifixion and resurrection. Some of the codices were sealed, prompting yet more breathless speculation that they could include the sealed book, shown only to the Messiah, mentioned in the Book of Revelation. One of the few sentences translated thus far from the texts, according to the BBC, reads, "I shall walk uprightly"--a phrase that also appears in Revelation. "While it could be simply a sentiment common in Judaism," BBC writer Robert Pigott notes, "it could here be designed to refer to the resurrection."

But the field of biblical archaeology is also prey to plenty of hoaxes and enterprising fraudsters, so investigators are proceeding with due empirical caution. Initial metallurgical research indicates that the codices are about 2,000 years old--based on the manner of corrosion they have undergone, which, as Macrae writes, "experts believe would be impossible to achieve artificially."

Beyond the initial dating tests, however, little is confirmed about the codices or what they contain. And the saga of their discovery has already touched off a battle over ownership rights between Israel and Jordan. As the BBC's Pigott recounts, the cache surfaced when a Jordanian Bedouin saw a menorah—the Jewish religious candleabra—exposed in the wake of a flash flood. But the codices somehow passed into the ownership of an Israeli Bedouin named Hassam Saeda, who claims that they have been in his family's possession for the past 100 years. The Jordanian government has pledged to "exert all efforts at every level" to get the potentially priceless relics returned, Pigott reports.

Meanwhile, biblical scholars who have examined the codices point to significant textual evidence suggesting their early Christian origin. Philip Davies, emeritus professor of Old Testament Studies at Sheffield University, told Pigott he was "dumbstruck" at the sight of plates representing a picture map of ancient Jerusalem. "There is a cross in the foreground, and behind it is what has to be the tomb [of Jesus], a small building with an opening, and behind that the walls of the city," Davies explained. "There are walls depicted on other pages of these books, too, and they almost certainly refer to Jerusalem."

David Elkington, an ancient religion scholar who heads the British research team investigating the find, has likewise pronounced this nothing less than "the major discovery of Christian history." Elkington told the Daily Mail that "it is a breathtaking thought that we have held these objects that might have been held by the early saints of the Church."

Still, other students of early Christian history are urging caution, citing precedents such as the debunked discovery of an ossuary said to contain Jesus' bones. New Testament scholar Larry Hurtado observes that since these codices are miniature, they were likely intended for private, rather than liturgical, use. This would likely place their date of origin closer to the 3rd century CE. But only further research and full translation of the codices can fully confirm the nature of the find. The larger lesson here is likely that of Eccliastes 3:1—be patient, since "to everything there is a season."

FBI asks public for help breaking encrypted notes tied to 1999 murder

Publicado

In what seems like a throwback to the still-unsolved Zodiac killings that terrorized the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1970s, the FBI has sent out a public appeal for amateur sleuths to help solve a key cryptographic clue in a 1999 murder case.

On June 30, 1999, police officers in St. Louis, Missouri found the body of 41-year-old Ricky McCormick, who'd been murdered and dumped in a field. The only clues investigators recovered from the scene were two encrypted notes stuffed into the victim's pockets.

"Despite extensive work by our Cryptanalysis and Racketeering Records Unit (CRRU), as well as help from the American Cryptogram Association, the meanings of those two coded notes remain a mystery to this day, and Ricky McCormick's murderer has yet to face justice," the FBI said in a press release today. CRRU chief Dan Olson added, "We are really good at what we do, but we could use some help with this one ... Maybe someone with a fresh set of eyes might come up with a brilliant new idea."

The FBI has reached out to the public with code breaking brain teasers in the past--but they were games, not actual cases. This is the chance for want-to-be FBI sleuths to break their brains on code that is part of a current investigation.

Here are the notes:

17-Yr Old Honor Roll Student Pistol Whips Her Mom Into Buying Car

Publicado

A once Ivy League bound Fort Myers, Florida teen is now headed to jail instead.

Rachel Anne Hachero, 17 was so intent on getting a a new car, a 2004 black Nissan 305Z, police say she hit her mom in the head with a 9 mm Sig Sauer handgun. Hachero then forced her mom to drive to the dealership, where she signed for the vehicle.

The mother in the incident has not been named due to the nature of the event. She didn't come forward to the police until the next day, because her daughter had threatened to kill her.

The assault would seem to go against Hachero's nature. The high school senior was an honor roll student who had been accepted to several Ive League schools already.

After reporting the event, the mom didn't want to press charges fearing it would ruin her daughter's college chances. Police took her into custody anyway after finding the gun she had used and discovering it was stolen.

NASA Spacecraft Snaps 1st Photo of Mercury from Orbit

Publicado

The first spacecraft ever to circle Mercury has beamed home the first-ever photo taken of the small rocky planet from orbit, showing a stark landscape peppered with craters.

NASA's Messenger spacecraft snapped the new Mercury photo today (March 29) at 5:20 a.m. EDT (0920 GMT). The photo shows the stark gray landscape of southern Mercury, a view that is dominated by a huge impact crater.

"This image is the first ever obtained from a spacecraft in orbit about the solar system's innermost planet," Messenger mission scientists explained in a statement.

The new Mercury photo shows a region around the south pole of Mercury. A 53-mile (85-kilometer) wide crater called Debussy clearly stands out in the upper right of the image, with bright rays emanating from its center.

A smaller crater called Matabei, which is 15 miles (24 km) wide and is known for its "unusual dark rays," is also visible in the image to the west of the Debussy crater, mission managers explained.

The new Mercury photo was posted to the Messenger mission website managed by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, which is overseeing the flight for NASA.

The photo is the first of 363 snapshots Messenger took during six hours of observations around Mercury. The images are expected to cover previously unseen areas of Mercury, terrain that was missed by Messenger during three previous flybys before it entered orbit.

Messenger arrived at Mercury on March 17, more than 6 1/2 years after its launch from Earth.

The spacecraft paused in its Mercury photo reconnaissance work just long enough to beam the new images back to Earth, mission managers said.

"The Messenger team is currently looking over the newly returned data, which are still continuing to come down," Messenger mission scientists said.

NASA plans to hold a teleconference with reporters on Wednesday to review the latest Mercury discoveries by the Messenger probe. The spacecraft's name is short for the bulky moniker MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging.

The $446 million Messenger probe is expected to spend at least one Earth year studying Mercury from orbit. The spacecraft is in an extremely elliptical orbit that brings it within 124 miles (200 kilometers) of Mercury at the closest point and retreats to more than 9,300 miles (15,000 km) away at the farthest point.

The primary science mission phase will begin on April 4, when Messenger will start mapping the entire surface of Mercury, a process that is expected to require around 75,000 images. Scientists hope the spacecraft will help answer longstanding mysteries over the planet's geology, formation and history.

While Messenger is the first mission ever to orbit around Mercury, it is not the first spacecraft to visit the planet. NASA's Mariner 10 spacecraft flew by the planet three times in the mid-1970s.

Baltic Sea letter in a bottle found 24 years later

Publicado

MOSCOW – Nearly a quarter-century after a German boy tossed a message in a bottle off a ship in the Baltic Sea, he's received an answer.

A 13-year-old Russian, Daniil Korotkikh, was walking with his parents on a beach when he saw something glittering lying in the sand.

"I saw that bottle and it looked interesting," Korotkikh told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "It looked like a German beer bottle with a ceramic plug, and there was a message inside."

His father, who knows schoolboy German, translated the letter, carefully wrapped in cellophane and sealed by a medical bandage.

It said: "My name is Frank, and I'm five years old. My dad and I are traveling on a ship to Denmark. If you find this letter, please write back to me, and I will write back to you."

The letter, dated 1987, included an address in the town of Coesfeld.

The boy in the letter, Frank Uesbeck, is now 29. His parents still live at the letter's address.

"At first I didn't believe it," Uesbeck told the AP about getting the response from Korotkikh. In fact, he barely remembered the trip at all; his father actually wrote the letter.

The Russian boy and the German man met each other earlier this month via an Internet video link.

Korotkikh showed Uesbeck the bottle where he found the message and the letter that he put in a frame.

The Russian boy said he does not believe that the bottle actually spent 24 years in the sea: "It would not have survived in the water all that time," he said.

He believes it had been hidden under the sand where he found it — on the Curonian Spit, a 100-kilometer (60-mile) stretch of sand in Lithuania and Russia.

In the web chat earlier this month, Uesbek gave Korotkikh his new address to write to and promised to write back when he receives his letter.

"He'll definitely get another letter from me," the 29-year-old said.

Uesbeck was especially thrilled that he was able to have a positive impact on a life of a young person far away from Germany.

"It's really a wonderful story," he said. "And who knows? Perhaps one day we will actually be able to arrange a meeting in person."

ABC Rumored To Be Trying To Orchestrate A Rihanna & Chris Brown Reunion On Good Morning America

Publicado  March 29, 2011

Chris Brown's tantrum backstage on ABC's Good Morning America may lead to a big ratings event for the network.

There are reports that ABC wants to televise a meeting between Rihanna and Chris Brown.

The pair have been the focus of blogs and tv stations ever since Brown assaulted Rihanna two years ago. According to the National Post, ABC wants to “milk this event for everything it’s worth.”

Brown's career is back on track, his new album 'F.A.M.E.' will debut at number one on Billboard, so it's unclear if something like this would make sense for him. He's already paying his debt back to society and Rihanna via probation. Making this tv reunion seem unlikely.

12-year-old takes aim at Einstein's theories

Publicado

In some ways, Jacob Barnett is just like any other 12-year-old kid. He plays Guitar Hero, shoots hoops with his friends, and has a platonic girlfriend.

But in other ways, he's a little different. Jake, who has an IQ of 170, began solving 5,000-piece jigsaw puzzles at the age of 3, not long after he'd been diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, a mild form of autism. A few years later, he taught himself calculus, algebra, and geometry in two weeks. By 8, he had left high school, and is currently taking college-level advanced astrophysics classes—while tutoring his older classmates. And he's being recruited for a paid researcher job by Indiana University.

Now, he's at work on a theory that challenges the Big Bang—the prevailing explanation among scientists for how the universe came about. It's not clear how developed it is, but experts say he's asking the right questions.

"The theory that he's working on involves several of the toughest problems in astrophysics and theoretical physics," Scott Tremaine of Princeton University's Institute for Advanced Studies—where Einstein himself worked—wrote in an email to Jake's family. "Anyone who solves these will be in line for a Nobel Prize."

Here you can watch Jake question some of the key elements of Albert Einstein's theories on quantum physics:
It's not clear where Jake got his gifts from. "Whenever I try talking about math with anyone in my family," he told the Indianapolis Star, "they just stare blankly."

But his parents encouraged his interests from the start. Once, they took him to the planetarium at Butler University. "We were in the crowd, just sitting, listening to this guy ask the crowd if anyone knew why the moons going around Mars were potato-shaped and not round," Jake's mother, Kristine Barnett, told the Star. "Jacob raised his hand and said, 'Excuse me, but what are the sizes of the moons around Mars?' "

After the lecturer answered, said Kristine, "Jacob looked at him and said the gravity of the planet ... is so large that (the moon's) gravity would not be able to pull it into a round shape."

"That entire building ... everyone was just looking at him, like, 'Who is this 3-year-old?'"

Drake Speaks on Meeting Lil Wayne for the First Time

Publicado

Interview Magazine reports:

At the age of just 28, Lil Wayne has already made an indelible influence on a young generation of rappers. He famously discovered and mentored Drake, after a tape by the former Degrassi star made it to his inner circle. The rapper commanded Drake's presence in Houston the next day. The rest is history, as told to Dimitri Ehrlich and Interview:

"The, the music was played to him by someone I knew at the time who was around him. I assume it was played on the tour bus, you know, but I never really got the exact story. Two songs into it, he stopped the CD and asked the person to get me on the phone. I showed up to Houston and I was staying at the Hotel Derek, I remember. They brought me to my room and I was just in disbelief, like, "What am I doing here?" You know? For me it was surreal.

I got a knock on the door and it was E.I., who later went on to become one of my closest friends. He was just like, you know, "Wayne wants to see you on the bus. And I'm his, I'm his road manager." So he brought me on the bus, and Wayne was getting like the most painful tattoo in the world. He was getting these huge wings on each side of his body. I'm a very observant person, you know, and when I haven't met somebody, and I get the chance to actually see them in person, I try not to talk too much. I speak when spoke to. I'm just staring around taking in little things, you know... ashtrays and cups, what that person's eating, what that person's hobbies are, if I can tell by looking—I really study an individual by their surroundings.

Then he proceeded to play me Tha Carter III—of course I was blown away at the time, 'cause nobody had heard it yet. I heard it front to back and it was, it was amazing. I just remember like little anecdotes, like somebody came on the bus like, "Yo, Kobe Bryant wants a iPod so he can play it tonight." It was just like crazy, crazy things that on in Wayne's life every day. Everybody's a Lil' Wayne fan.

The first meeting wasn't really anything pivotal. It was cool. I think he saw that I was a good kid, or trying to be a good kid, and I was just staring at one of my idols. I stayed on the road with him for a while, about a week and a half. And I think it was the last night before I went back home, we finally got into the studio and made some music."

L.A Times reports: Beyonce has ended her management relationship with her father, Mathew Knowles, it was announced Monday.

Her publicist, Yvette Noel-Schure, issued a statement that the multi-platinum Grammy-winning singer and her father have parted ways "on a business level."

The elder Knowles has managed his daughter since she debuted in the late '90s as the lead singer of Destiny's Child, while her mother, Tina Knowles, acted as her stylist.

"He is my father for life and I love my dad dearly," she said in the short statement.

Though rumors that she would be managed by husband Jay-Z’s Roc Nation company have swirled since he founded the company in 2008, no new management deal has been announced.

Paris Hilton chats with Lil Wayne for Interview Magazine, duo discusses jail, music collaboration

Publicado

MTV reports:

In the April issue of Interview magazine, Lil Wayne and Paris Hilton bond over their love of animals, music and Miami hotspots ... and, of course, their time behind bars, too.

In a cross-country phone call — Wayne was at home in Miami while Hilton was taking a break from shooting a reality series in Los Angeles — the pair discussed a variety of topics (Googling themselves, the paparazzi, astrology, etc.,), but really broke the ice when the conversation turned to their respective jail sentences. Wayne did eight months at New York's Rikers Island after a gun-possession arrest, while Hilton famously served 23 days in 2007 following a parole violation.

"For me, it was OK, because it just meant that I was alone in my thoughts," Wayne said when asked about the portion of his sentence he served in solitary confinement, after being caught with an MP3 player. "There were times when it was pretty tough to be by yourself, and to have no television, no nothing. That was kind of tough."

"I had to do 24 nights in solitary," Hilton added [during her sentence, she was held in a separate cell as a safety precaution].

"Oh, so you know how it is?" Wayne responded.

"Yeah, I know how it is," Hilton said.

The discussion then turned to being released from prison — an experience Wayne said "words cannot explain," and one Hilton called "the best feeling in the world" — and how that newfound freedom affects the individual.

"You're definitely more in tune to what you're doing. You're definitely more humble," Wayne explained. "I think that most people who come out of that situation just want to make the most of life afterwards. Honestly, it was just one big humbling experience."

And in keeping with that life-affirming sentiment — following some in-depth talk about travel and zodiac signs and Weezy's pet sharks — both Wayne and Hilton discussed what's next for them: Hilton said she'd "really love" to finish her long-in-the-works second album, while Wayne ... well, he has more tangible goals.

"I want to bank a cool $50 million at least," he said. "At the end of the year, I want to be able to say that I banked $50 million. Not generated $50 million, but actually banked $50 million."

DJ Megatron Shot And Killed In Staten Island

Publicado

NY Daily News reports: TV and radio personality DJ Megatron was fatally shot on Staten Island early Sunday morning, authorities and a family member said.

Witnesses heard a single shot at about 2 a.m. in the Clifton section of Staten Island. Megatron was pronounced dead on the scene a short time later from a gun shot to his stomach.

Law enforcement officials would not immediately confirm his identity and said they were investigating the shooting.

Keith Robinson, who identified himself as Megatron's father-in-law, said his family was distraught.

"He was a good person," Robinson said, visibly upset, "Everyone's just shocked."

The Staten Island performer, originally from Pennsylvania, was a regular on BET's "106th and Park," and also was heard on HOT 97.

A friend who arrived at the scene at about 4 a.m. said she talked to him a few hours earlier.

"He just called me," Lisa Torres said, "He asked me if I was going to [a friend's] party."

She became inconsolable as the news sank in.

"He's right there on the ground. I can't believe this," she screamed as she broke down in tears. "You're lying, you're lying! That's not Megatron right there!"

Reese Witherspoon marries Jim Toth

Publicado

Reese Witherspoon married Jim Toth early Saturday evening at her 6-acre ranch in Ojai, Calif., UsMagazine.com has confirmed.

Wearing a custom-designed Monique Lhuillier gown, the actress, 35, exchanged vows with CAA agent Toth, 40, in front of 120 family members and friends (including Renee Zellweger, and Alyssa Milano, and Tobey Maguire) in the front courtyard of the Ojai house.

Witherspoon's best friend, Heather Rosenfield, served as matron of honor, and her kids with ex-husband Ryan Phillippe -- daughter Ava, 11, and son Deacon, 7 -- took part in the ceremony. The Oscar winner's young nieces served as flower girls.

The "Tennessee Waltz" was the processional music for Toth and the kids, while Witherspoon walked down the aisle to "Here Comes the Bride." The 20-minute ceremony was officiated by Reverend Jimmy Bartz, founder of Thad's church in Santa Monica, where the couple have been attending weekly Sunday services. The duo exchanged wedding bands designed by jeweler William Goldberg.

Located 90 miles north of Los Angeles, the Ojai ranch -- where the star gardens and keeps horses, donkeys, pigs, goats and chickens -- has been Witherspoon's rural escape for years.

It's the second wedding for the actress, who divorced Phillippe, 36, back in 2007 after seven years of marriage. Shortly after ending a three-year relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal, she and never-married Toth began dating in January 2010. (Although A-list firm CAA also counts Witherspoon as a client, Toth has never represented her.)

The star's rep confirmed their engagement to Us on Dec. 28, 2010. "They are extremely happy," the rep said.

About a week later, Witherspoon debuted her engagement bling -- a 4-carat, $250,000 Ashocka cut diamond ring from William Goldberg -- at a Laker's Game.
